Dave Hanlon
Dave Hanlon BSc BVMS(Hons) MVSc MACVSc Diplomate ACT

Dave graduated from Murdoch University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. He then completed a 3yr residency and Masters Degree in large animal reproduction at Massey University. In 1996 he joined Matamata Veterinary Services where he provides specialised equine reproduction services. In 2001 he became a  Registered Specialist in equine reproduction. In 2002 he was invited to lecture in equine reproduction at Cornell University, New York and was the resident veterinarian at Cornell's Equine Research Park for the northern hemisphere breeding season. He has given numerous presentations on equine reproduction throughout New Zealand and the world to both the general public and the veterinary profession. He has lectured veterinary students in New York, Kentucky, Virginia, Missouri, New Zealand and Australia. Dave is a Senior Lecturer in Reproduction at Massey University. Current areas of research that Dave is involved in are: identifying the causes of reproductive wastage in NZ thoroughbred mares, development of a new intravaginal progesterone-releasing device for oestrus control in mares and using the mare to develop a model for human infertility.

 

Dave Keenan
Dave Keenan BVSc MACVSc

Dave was a 1994 graduate from Massey University before spending 2 years in mixed practice in Ashburton.
He came to MVS in 1995 and is currently one of the five practice directors. Dave achieved his membership exams of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Equine Medicine in 2003 and has a specific interest in performance horse work and equine skeletal development.

 

 

Jason Lowe
Jason Lowe BVSc CertEP

Jason graduated from Massey University in 1993. He then spent time in mixed practice in Gore before taking up a position at Rossdale & Partners, Newmarket, England. After 3 years there he then went to Gibsons Veterinary Hospital in Leicestershire, another equine referral hospital.
Jason completed a Certificate in Equine Practice with the Royal Veterinary College in 2000 and then returned to New Zealand in 2003.

 

 

  

 

Andrea Ritmeester BVSc MS DiplACVS Registered Specialist Equine Surgery

Andrea graduated Massey University in 1991. She took a job in mixed large animal practice with Veterinary Associates Equine and Farm in Takanini for 2 years before moving to USA to complete a 3-year Residency programme in Large Animal Surgery at Purdue University, Indiana, from 1993-1996. She stayed on as Instructor at Purdue University Veterinary School for another year while finishing a Master of Science degree in 1997.
Andrea returned to NZ in 1997 to resume work at Veterinary Associates Equine and Farm as Practice Surgeon. She passed the Boards Examination in Large Animal Surgery for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in San Diego in 1998 to become the only Boarded Large Animal Surgeon in private practice in NZ at that time, and was granted Specialist status in Equine Surgery by the NZ Veterinary Council in 2000.

Andrea continued to work at Veterinary Associates Equine and Farm in South Auckland until early 2010, when a lifestyle change saw her move to the Waikato with husband Mark and 5-year-old daughter Jessica. She joined the Matamata Veterinary Services Equine team in March 2010 and is currently performing all types of surgery with a special interest in arthroscopy and abdominal surgery.

 

 

Gemma Cowley BVSc BSc

Gemma graduated from Massey University in 1999 with a BSc (physiology) and in 2007 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Prior to returning to Massey to attend vetschool, she spent time at Kentucky Equine Research in the states undertaking nutrition research.  Originally from Taranaki, Gemma returned there upon graduating to work in mixed veterinary practice before taking up an equine internship in Queensland. Gemma started with MVS in June 2010 and has a special interest in performance horse work and equine medicine.

 

 

 

Hannah Bowen BVSc, MRCVS

Hannah graduated from the University of Bristol, England in July 2004.  After two and a half years in mixed practice and nine months as a first opinion equine vet in practice in the UK, Hannah joined the Liphook Equine Hospital, Hampshire, England to focus on her interest in equine veterinary medicine.  After completing an 18 month internship at this busy referral clinic in July 2009 she spent the 2009-2010 breeding season at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital, Victoria Australia building on her interest in equine stud medicine and neonatal care.  Hannah joined MVS in July 2010.

 

 

 

Rabecca McKenzie BVSc BApplSc, Dip HBM

Rabecca graduated from Massey University in 2008 with a double degree in Veterinary Science and Applied Science.  Prior to this she completed a Diploma in Horse Business Management in Australia and holds a British Preliminary riding instructors certificate that she completed while on her OE.  Rabecca has competed in equestrian events in both the UK and America.  Growing up in the Waikato and from a family horse stud background she is interested in all facets of the industry particularly stud medicine.

 

 

 

Frances Peat BVSc

Frances completed her degree at Massey University in 2009, receiving the Equine Branch of the New Zealand Veterinary Association Prize in her graduating class. Frances has been with us since January 2010 and is developing a particular interest in performance horse work. She has competed at 1* level in eventing, played representative hockey for Auckland for six seasons and has represented New Zealand in orienteering.
