Latest Spore Count Results
March 8, 2019
Spore counts hold similar levels to last week as the dry spell continues.
Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:
- Hinuera – 1600 spores/gram
- Matamata – 16,000 spores/gram
- Te poi – 15,000 spores/gram
- Tirau – 10,000 spores/gram
- Walton – 23,000 spores/gram
Most farmers are now sending culls and feeding increased amounts of silage and meal to milkers. Because of this higher than usual reliance on supplements eczema risk is still relatively low for this time of the year.
Everybody is now waiting with ‘baited breath’ for any significant rain. Once this much anticipated rain does arrive, we expect spore counts to increase rapidly.
Reminder: MVS provides a herd dry-off service. Given current climatic conditions we expect an increased demand from farmers requiring our services to assist dry-off. Please phone the clinic ASAP once you have a date so we can co-ordinate scheduling to meet everyone’s requirements.
