Fiona, Dr Dave Hanlon and the MVS GlenBred team (Kristie, Victoria and Lynne) have had the privilege and very exciting opportunity to work with the Thai Fishing Cats, 'Besar' (male) and 'Imphal' (queen), and the wonderful people at Hamilton Zoo as part of their breeding and genetic preservation program for the endangered Thai Fishing Cats. The GlenBred team have successfully collected semen from the male fishing cat ('Besar') and frozen his semen for
potential future use in breeding programs for Thai Fishing Cats in NZ and in zoo's all over the world. The indefinite preservation of this genetic material in liquid nitrogen is very important to endangered species such as the Thai Fishing Cat. We hope to also carry out an insemination of the Fishing Cat queen ('Imphal') with Besar's semen in the near future. We are very honoured and excited at GlenBred to be involved in such an important breeding program and hope we can help produce some Thai Fishing Cat kittens!
Fiona Hollinshead is the breeding consultant to the NSW Police Dog Unit and travels to Sydney to freeze semen from their valuable Police dogs. NZ and NSW work together to maintain their police dog genetics.
See our "Success Stories" for a picture of NZ Police's Venus with her latest litter. Venus was inseminated by transcervical insemination using frozen thawed semen. This semen was frozen in Australia by Dr Fiona Hollinshead and imported into New Zealand. Venus naturally whelped 13 puppies - this is a huge number of puppies using frozen thawed semen. We are all thrilled with this successful outcome.
Dr Fiona Hollinshead flew to Sydney in early September 2010 where she lectured to veterinary students at the Sydney University.
Dr Fiona Hollinshead headed to Brisbane in June 2010 to a conference held during Veterinary Science Week which is run by the Australian Veterinary Association on the Gold Coast. At this conference Veterinary Sepecialists in different fields spoke, including GlenBred's own Fiona Hollinshead. Fiona's topic was titled "New Insights in Canine Dystocia".
