Equine Internship

Matamata Veterinary Services is seeking applicants for our staggered equine internship programme, with one position commencing in January each year and the second commencing in August each year. Both positions are for a fixed 12-month term.

You will work as part of our equine team, based at our purpose built hospital. Our team consists of ten veterinarians, including one other intern, supported by five nurses and two office staff.

The internship position is primarily hospital based. Caseload is high and varied, including medicine, surgery, some reproduction, lameness and other performance horse work. You will have the opportunity to work alongside an experienced group of practitioners with a wide range of skills, including a board-certified surgeon and two board-certified theriogenologists. Formal tuition and mentoring are part of this package.

A culture of quality service to the client, dedicated care of the patient, teamwork and fun exist in this practice. CPD is valued, supported and expected.

This position is ideally suited to a new or recent graduate that wishes to rapidly upgrade their equine skills. Applicants MUST be eligible for registration with the New Zealand Veterinary Council. Applications should include a cover letter and a CV including the names of two referees.

Seasonal Equine Veterinarian

Our 9 vet equine practice needs another experienced, enthusiastic colleague with a keen interest in Reproduction to join our team and provide support for the Equine breeding season.  This position is for a fixed 6-month term, commencing from September of each year.

We provide routine reproductive management on thoroughbred stud farms throughout the region and the successful applicant must be capable of managing on-farm mare and foal medical cases during the breeding season. Other equine reproduction caseload involves all aspects of assisted reproductive technologies (AI/ET, semen collection, freezing etc.) and referral services for infertility cases and reproductive surgery.  Preference will be given to candidates that have demonstrated an active interest in the field of reproduction.

A culture of quality service to the client, dedicated care of the patient and peer support exists in this practice. Continuing education is encouraged and supported.

Financial Administrator – Full Time Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a friendly, enthusiastic and organised person to join our team!

This position involves all aspects of accounts payable, including creditors, bank reconciliations and monthly financial reporting. Over time it may develop into GST reporting, FBT reporting and other areas of finance. Additionally you will be required to maintain and process essential veterinary records as well as provide support to our Administration team.

As the successful applicant you will approach all aspects of your role in a professional manner, you will require the ability to work with minimum supervision, manage and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and maintain a consistent client approach under pressure.  Proven experience and skills in accounts payable would be an advantage.

You will be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and will thrive and contribute to our positive team environment!

Semen Storage and Distribution Manager

Matamata Veterinary Services is world-renowned in the field of animal reproduction. A rare opportunity has become available to join our team and we are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised person to provide specialised support to the busy referral reproduction side of our practice.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have a tertiary qualification, preferably in the field of animal science, animal reproduction or veterinary nursing
  • Be a motivated and supportive team member
  • Have exceptional communication skills
  • Be highly organized
  • Be a meticulous record keeper with exceptional attention to detail
  • Have experience in handling animals, specifically horses and dogs
  • Be proficient with Microsoft office and administration duties

Whilst not essential, experience in laboratory management, semen freezing or the management of long-term liquid nitrogen storage tanks would be an advantage. Confidence in communicating with clients from all over the country that breed dogs and horses is essential. Being a team player is an essential attribute to have for this role but you will also require the ability to work with minimal supervision, manage and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines, and maintain a consistent client approach under pressure.

Other aspects of the position include invoicing, recording information into databases (Excel and a specialised frozen semen database), and regular updating of our website and Facebook pages. You will work in our team which includes veterinarians, small animal and equine veterinary nurses and administrative support staff.
