Veterinarian
Nigel began his veterinary career in mixed veterinary practice in 1980.  He then worked in Jamaica and the UK for several years before returning to NZ to become involved in Embryo Transfer work in the mid 80's.

He joined MVS in 1988 as a mixed species veterinarian with responsibility for the Small Animal Team.

MVS Small Animals including GlenBred now employs 2.5 full time veterinarians.  With this growth Nigel has focused his efforts more on the medical aspects of small animal practice while still enjoying a lighter surgical caseload.  Nigel established the Small Animal Reproduction Unit - "GlenBred" at MVS and provides a support role in this area.

His areas of special interest include Dermatology and Internal Medicine.  He is licensed to perform PennHIP Radiography, an innovative new method of screening for Hip Dysplasia in dogs and cats.  He is an experienced and committed veterinarian who makes every effort to solve the medical dilemmas he faces on a daily basis.

When not working Nigel has keen interests in travel, animal welfare projects in the developing world, skiing and boating.

Chris Hutchings

Chris Hutchings BVSc, MACVSc

Veterinarian
Chris graduated from Massey University in 1977 and went on to practice for 30 years in a mixed and small animal practice in NZ.  For many years Chris was the Companion Animal Vet and Partner in a successful private Dairy and Small Animal Clinic based in Morrinsville.  Chris was admitted by examination as a Member of the Australasian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal medicine in 1987.  He joined MVS in 2003, initially on a part-time basis during the period he was President of the New Zealand Veterinary Association.

After Chris finished his term of office, he increased his clinical workload with MVS.  Chris is multi-talented with skills in both Farm and Small Animal Veterinary work and now contributes to both the Farm and Small Animal teams.  His Small Animal responsibility is as primary surgeon and support to the Medical team.

Chris is a very empathetic veterinarian, whose experience and manner develop strong relationships with his clients.  He is very versatile with a wide range of verterinary skills.  In 2000 Chris was awarded the Companion Animal Society Service Award and in 2008 he was awarded the New Zealand Veterinary Association Annual Service Award for services to the Veterinary Profession.

 

Fiona Hollinshead
Fiona Hollinshead BVSc (Hons), PhD, Diplomate ACT

Veterinarian
Fiona brings with her some real heavyweight skills and knowledge.  Fiona is a graduate of Sydney University and after some years in small animal practice returned to The Faculty of Veterinary Science at Sydney University in 2000 to undertake a PhD in Animal Reproduction and more specifically in sperm sexing, cryobiology, IVF, AI and other reproductive technologies.  After completing her PhD in 2004 she worked as an Anaesthetic Registrar at Sydney University Veterinary Teaching Hopsital in their Anaesthesia and Critical Care department.

Fiona persued her clinical and research interest in animal reproduction and moved to the USA in 2004 to take up a 2 year residency position in clinical reproduction at The Veterinary College at Cornell University in New York.  She successfully completed her board examinations at the end of her residency in 2006 and became a Member of the American College of Theriogenology, probably the highest formal Veterinary qualification in the world.  Fiona is a Registered Specialist in Small Animal Reproduction - the only specialist in New Zealand.

Fiona is the driver of MVS GlenBred, a unit specializing in advanced techniques in Small Animal Reproduction, including semen collection and assessment, semen freezing, artificial insemination and managing fertility issues.  She is a consultant to the NZ Guide Dogs Breeding Unit, MAF Detector Dog Program, NZ Police Dog Unit, NSW Police Dog Unit and countless highly respected dog breeders throughout NZ.

Fiona's experience in Anaesthesia and Critical Care also allows MVS Small Animals to provide real expertise in these areas.

 

Susan Murray BVSc

Veterinarian

Susan began her career in mixed practice in 2001 in Taranaki.  She then worked overseas in the United Kingdom predominantly in Small Animal practice, gaining invaluable experience in a range of veterinary clinics.  Susan returned to the North Waikato to practice in a mixed veterinary clinic in 2006.  She then took time off from 2007 and had two beautiful children.  Her family now resides in Matamata and Susan has joined us in our Small Animal Clinic. 

 

 

 

Marit de Jong BVSc, BSc

Marit finished her Veterinary degree at Massey University in 2005 and started her career as a mixed animal veterinarian working in South Taranaki for three and a half years.  After a 6 month locum position in the central North Island she joined the MVS team in early 2010.  Marit is interested in both small animal medicine and surgery.  She is enthusiastic about working with small animals and enjoys the challenges associated with diagnosing and treating the more complex cases.

She is thrilled to be part of such a dedicated team and feels fortunate to have such great knowledge and support available from her fellow vets and vet nurses.
