In-foal Touch of Ruby ends career in grand style

February 17, 2014

A Touch of Ruby completed her race career in spectacular style at Trentham yesterday.

The Matamata mare is in foal to Jimmy Choux and was having her final race when she came from last to win the $200,000 Thorndon Mile.

It was a stunning open company debut by A Touch Of Ruby who went into the Group I race with a handicap rating of just 81.

The Pins mare was also backing up after winning a rating 85 1300m at Pukekohe the previous weekend. Being in foal has obviously agreed with the four-year-old, who began the season as a one-win horse. She won a rating 75 1400m on her home track in November, starting a run of form that has produced three wins in a space of five starts.

“Ever since she was served, she has been one happy mare,” trainer Stephen Autridge said. “This was going to be the last throw of the dice for her and I was just hoping she wouldn’t end up on the ballot.” A Touch Of Ruby is raced by Sydney owner Max Whitby.

A Touch Of Ruby was checked early yesterday and ended up at the back of the field and three-wide. She improved on the turn and sustained a big run down the outer. “She just travelled into it and I said ‘please keep going,’ “rider Craig Grylls said.
