Why use AI instead of natural service?
There are several advantages to using AI compared to natural service:

  1.  The mare does not need to be transported to the stallion.
  2.  Semen can be shipped all over the country and even overseas.
  3.  It is safer for both the mare and the stallion.
  4.  The conception rate is often higher than with natural service.

What is the success rate when using AI?
The average conception rate per cycle when using fresh/shipped semen of excellent quality is 60-90%. This means that it usually takes 1 or 2 cycles to get your mare in foal.

What is involved with shipping fresh semen?

Semen is collected from the stallion using an artificial vagina. After collection, semen extender is added to the semen helping to prolong the life of the sperm. The extended semen is then placed into a specially designed chilly-bin for shipment, which slowly cools the semen down to 5°C prolonging the length of time the semen is viable. Sperm will remain viable in the transport container for up to 48 hours, but the sooner the semen is used the better. Semen is usually transported via air-freight to local airports or by overnight courier where a reliable service is available.

Once your mare arrives at MVS, she will be scanned to see what stage she is at in her reproductive cycle. Once this is determined, she can either be prepared for insemination using ovulation drugs (to ensure ovulation), or can be monitored as her cycle progresses. If your mare has just ovulated when she arrives with us, she can be ‘short cycled’ using a prostaglandin injection 7 days after her ovulation date.

A few days prior to your mare requiring semen, we will contact the stallion owner to request semen be collected and shipped so that it arrives with us at an optimum time for the insemination of your mare. One to two days following insemination, your mare will be checked for ovulation and for the presence of fluid. Your mare will need a pregnancy scan 14 days after ovulation.
