Five out of Five monitor farms have recorded low spore counts this week

April 24, 2020

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 10,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 5,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 2,000 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks –  10,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks – 5,000  spores/grams

Based on these results it appears we are nearing the end of the Facial Eczema season with all monitor farms having counts of 10,000 or less.

While the general trend is showing a decline in spore numbers we are committed to tracking these numbers for at least one more week before we close the curtain on monitoring.

If you are getting ready to move young stock off for grazing, it is important to remember if you are supplementing young stock with copper that if spore counts on farm are elevated and young stock are supplemented with copper this can result in significant liver damage (as a result of the copper interacting with facial eczema spores). Feel free to give us a call to discuss your options and timing.

We are continuing to provide a spore counting service through this lock-down period. We have designated drop off bins at the clinic should you bring in any grass for processing.
We ask that if you plan on bringing grass in please call the clinic before you do so for further instructions.
