Latest FE Spore count results 26.2.21

February 26, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks   23,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks –  25,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 23,000 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 15,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  48,000 spores/gram

Spore counts have risen across all monitor farms this week, excluding Matamata where the count has decreased. The largest increase seen was on the Walton monitor farm where counts increased by roughly 30,000 spores/g. This week we have also processed a number of samples from non-monitor farms and they continue to reflect moderate-high risk.

It is important to remember that paddocks with increased dead matter, or that are being irrigated should be considered high risk.

Is your zinc supplementation effective?

By blood sampling 10-15 cows for zinc we can assess the protection level of your herd and advise if adjustments are required. We have taken blood samples from a number of farms now and we have successfully identified situations in which zinc dosing can be decreased to avoid toxicity and situations where dosing can be increased so cows are optimally protected

If you would like to know more about the various ways in which you can supplement your stock with Zinc, feel free to pop into the clinic and chat to the team.
