Spore count bulletin for week ended 12.2.2021
February 12, 2021
Spore counts from monitor farms remain stable this week with Matamata, Walton and Hinuera farms recording slightly higher than last week. While this indicates moderate-low risk, this week Gribbles Laboratory had reported counts in the 100,000’s for the Matamata area. This continues to be a timely reminder that counts are variable. If we receive the promised rain that has been forecast, we expect these counts to rise, but at this stage they appear to be stable.
Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:
- Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 15,000 spores/gram
- Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 30,000 spores/gram
- Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 5,000 spores/gram
- Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 1,600 spores/gram
- Walton Monitor Paddocks – 15,000 spores/gram
A REMINDER IF YOU BRING IN THREE GRASS SAMPLES FOR TESTING YOU CAN HAVE A FOURTH FREE!
Is your zinc supplementation effective?
By blood sampling 10-15 cows for zinc we can assess the protection level of your herd and advise if adjustments are required. We have taken blood samples from a number of farms now and we have successfully identified situations in which zinc dosing can be decreased to avoid toxicity and situations where dosing can be increased so cows are optimally protected.
If you would like to know more about the various ways in which you can supplement your stock with Zinc, feel free to pop into the clinic and chat to the team.
