Spore count results for this week

April 29, 2016

Spore count results for grass samples brought into the clinic for testing this week are as follows:

  • Hinuera West – 215,000 (high) on 27.4.2016
  • Matamata – 575,000 (high) on 26.4.2016 and 20,000 (slight) on 29.4.2016
  • Peria – 70,000 (high) on 26.4.2016
  • Richmond Downs – 295,000 (high) on 26.4.2016 and 40,000 (moderate) on 29.4.2016
  • Te Poi – 35,000 (moderate) on 26.4.2016
  • Walton – Nil (low risk) on 29.4.2016
  • Wardville – 15,000 (slight) on 27.4.2016

There are still high spore counts evident in samples being submitted over the past several days. For this reason we recommend you continue treating with prophylactic zinc.

Supplies of Solutrace-FE for water are still available, plus limited supplies of Face-Guard zinc boluses.

Other options include:

  1. Alternative feeds to reduce spore intakes
  2. Aim to have high residuals, taking care not to run yourself out of feed
  3. Try to avoid ‘hot’ pastures. Bring in grass samples to identify hot pastures
  4. Check if zinc can be incorporated into the meal
  5. Spraying fungicides will not reduce the spores currently present, but you get benefits in the weeks to come
