Spore count results for this week

April 22, 2016

Spore count results for grass samples brought into the clinic for testing this week are as follows:

  • Hinuera West – 55,000 (high) on 21.4.2016
  • Matamata – 190,000 (high) on 18.4.2016
  • Peria – 105,000 (high) on 20.4.2016
  • Richmond Downs – 75,000 & 90,000 on 18.4.2016; 115,000 on 20.4.2016; 35,000 on 21.4.2016; 45,000 (high) on 22.4.2016
  • Te Poi – 35,000 (moderate) on 19.4.2016
  • Turanga-o-moana – 30,000 (moderate) on 22.4.2016

Spore counts are definitely starting to reduce, but are still more than capable of causing liver damage. Continue to treat animals for the time being.

Supplies of Solutrace-FE for water and drenching are still available, plus very limited supplies of Face-Guard zinc boluses.

Other options include:

  1. Alternative feeds to reduce spore intakes
  2. Aim to have high residuals, taking care not to run yourself out of feed
  3. Try to avoid ‘hot’ pastures. Bring in grass samples to identify hot pastures
  4. Check if zinc can be incorporated into the meal
  5. Spraying fungicides will not reduce the spores currently present, but you get benefits in the weeks to come
