Spore counts results this week

May 13, 2016

Spore count results for grass sample brought into the clinic for testing this week are as follows:

  • Hinuera West – 35,000 (moderate) on 12.5.2016
  • Matamata – 30,000 (moderate) on 09.05.2016 and 35,000 (moderate on 12.05.2016)
  • Peria – 120,000 (high) on 12.05.2016
  • Richmond Downs – 140,000 (high) on 09.05.2016 and Nil (low risk) on 11.05.2016
  • Te Poi – 5,000 (low risk) on 11.5.2016

We are still getting some high spore counts and recommend extreme caution if you are considering lowering or stopping preventative treatments.

Supplies of Solutrace-FE for water and Face-Guard zinc boluses are still available.

Other options include:

  1. Include alternative feeds to reduce spore intakes
  2. Aim to have high residuals, taking care not to run yourself out of feed
  3. Try to avoid ‘hot’ pastures. Bring in grass samples to identify hot pastures
  4. Check if zinc can be incorporated into the meal
  5. Spraying fungicides will not reduce the spores currently present, but you get benefits in the weeks to come
