Spores are present and conditions are right for Facial Eczema

March 5, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks  63,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 65,000  spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 13,300 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 33,300 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  25,000 spores/gram

Spore counts on monitor farms are showing moderate to high risk. With the recent rain and the night time temperatures remaining about 12oC we expect spore multiplication to continue. Gribbles Laboratory continues to report counts for the Matamata District with a count of over 400,000 spores/g being reported. So while the monitor farms give us an indication, there is no better way to assess your farms individual risk than getting your own grass tested.

Is your zinc supplementation effective?

By blood sampling 10-15 cows for zinc we can assess the protection level of your herd and advise if adjustments are required. We have taken blood samples from a number of farms now and we have successfully identified situations in which zinc dosing can be decreased to avoid toxicity and situations where dosing can be increased so cows are optimally protected

If you would like to know more about the various ways in which you can supplement your stock with Zinc, feel free to pop into the clinic and chat to the team.
