This week’s spore counts are in…

April 8, 2016

Spore count results for grass samples brought into the clinic for testing this week are as follows:

  • Hinuera East – 55,000 (high) on 8.1.2016
  • Hinuera West – 325,000 (high) on 7.4.2016
  • Matamata – 930,000 (high) on 7.4.2016
  • Peria – 225,000 (high) on 6.4.2016
  • Richmond Downs – 355,000 (high) on 4.4.2016
  • Te Poi – 30,000 (moderate) on 7.4.2016
  • Turanga-o-moana – 390,000 (high) on 8.4.2016

Spore counts are still high and due to unprecedented nationwide demand for zinc, bulk hepta sulphate is no longer available.

Alternatives available at MVS include:

  • Solutrace FE which supplies all your main trace elements and zinc in one easy formula
  • Limited numbers of Face-Guard boluses

We are currently attempting to source additional zinc monohydrate (water treatment) and zinc oxide. For this reason we advise you to contact us with your requirements as soon as possible.

Other options include:

  1. Alternative feeds to reduce spore intakes
  2. Aim to have high residuals, taking care not to run yourself out of feed
  3. Try to avoid ‘hot’ pastures. Bring in grass samples to identify hot pastures
  4. Check if zinc can be incorporated into meal
  5. Spraying fungicides will not reduce the spores currently present, but you may get benefits in the weeks to come
