Canine Cough

August 16, 2021

Canine Cough, or canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that’s common in New Zealand. The disease is most often spread in areas where dogs socialise, such as dog parks, boarding kennels and beaches. When our pets get canine cough they can get signs including runny eyes and nose, sneezing, and most commonly a dry hacking cough which can vary from a mild cough to a persistent cough that last days to weeks. While it’s not usually a serious threat to healthy dogs, in our younger, older or unwell pets it can spread to the lungs and become a pneumonia. Vaccination is an extremely important way to help manage and control canine cough.
