Cats and Inappropriate Toileting

September 16, 2015

When your cat leaves you inappropriate messes around your house, it understandably causes some unease in the household. A very common reaction is to tell off the cat in an attempt to prevent the behavior from recurring.

However there are many causes for inappropriate urination and defecation and if we can assess exactly what the problem is, we can better manage the behavior. Cats are by nature very clean animals and prefer to toilet and bury their waste, so the fact that they are not doing so tells us that something is not right in their world. Causes can include

  • Lower urinary tract disease causing sudden urge and discomfort
  • Stress related cystitis from changes in their cat life that make them very uneasy and scared, this can include other cats or dogs in their world causing stress or be human related.
  • Kidney problems causing increased water consumption and therefore increased toileting and being ‘caught short’
  • Territorial marking
  • Old age mental type changes that lead to forgetting learned toileting behavior

As there are a range of causes of inappropriate toileting it can take some time and effort to get to the bottom of the problem. One solution does not work for all cats and testing can be required to get to the bottom of the issue. However, we do regularly deal with this problem in cats and help owners and cats return to the former happy household.
