Desexing Your Pet
March 25, 2021
All cats should be desexed unless being used for breeding. This avoids the problems of unwanted pregnancy as well as reducing the risks from fighting of abscesses and FIV (feline aids virus). Kittens can be desexed once they reach 1kg but our general recommendations are from 4 months old.
There are different age recommendations for the desexing of dogs based on their breed and sex. Different sized dogs can be affected by diseases effecting joints such as hips and stifles. Different breeds of dogs can be affected by other diseases and cancers. There is continuing research going on in this subject to help us give you the best advice for your pet. These discussions are not simple ones and our vets prefer to have a careful discussion during the puppy vaccination consults.
