Lepto Vaccination

April 19, 2021

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial infection that is spread by rats, often through contaminated water. It is an extremely serious condition and is very often fatal for dogs. It is also contagious to humans.
Signs of infection can range from mild undiagnosed signs to multi-organ failure and death. Acute kidney disease is the most common presentation seen.
Leptospirosis can be prevented by vaccination so it is important to make sure your puppy or dog has the vaccination.
The initial course as a puppy consists of 2 injections, then every year after this a vaccine is needed to keep up immunity. This vaccination isn’t very long acting so you mustn’t be late having this yearly booster, otherwise immunity wanes and multiple boosters are then required.
