THE THYROID

June 28, 2021

The thyroid gland is located on the underside of the neck of your pet. We very commonly see disease caused by changes to the level of hormones it produces.

Hypothyroidism, or low production of thyroid hormone is most commonly seen in senior dogs. Signs that we see include:

  • Weight gain
  • Lethargy
  • Hair loss
  • Dull dry coat
  • Increased thirst and increased urination
  • Skin infections

Hyperthyroidism, or excessive production of thyroid hormone is one of the most common diseases of older cats, but can affect cats of any age. Signs that we see include:

  • Weight loss
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased appetite
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Hyperactivity and irritability
  • Poor or dull hair coat
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea

Blood tests are required to diagnose both of these problems and your pets can be treated with a range of options to give them a good quality of life.
