Matamata Veterinary Services has introduced a service to help retired residents care for their pets.
A nurse will be available to make home visits, administer flea and worming treatments, and do nail trimming.
Senior nurse Lynne Gillies said they would also be able to do initial assessments fi there were any concerns about the health of the animal.
“Some people are unable to bring their pets in, so we can go and assess wheteher they need to see a vet, and if so, we can bring the animal in,” Ms Gillies said.
The service aims to help maintain the health and wellbeing of pets in Matamata and was set up to assist those who have difficulty managing this by themselves.
The project was first run at Parkside Villas and Ms Gillies said it was very successful.
“I got a very good response from people,” she said
“It makes it so easy for them. Now we want to take it to the wider community and offer it as a free service”.
