Latest Spore Count results

January 15, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:
  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks  No samples tested
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 18,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 8,000 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks –  3,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks – 5,000  spores/gram

As expected, spore counts for the district have risen compared to last week and we expect this trend to continue. In the last seven days the biggest change we have seen was in Matamata with the count increasing 10 fold. If you have not done so yet, start supplementing your stock with zinc in preparation for counts to increase.

As it is the beginning of the Facial Eczema season we think it is best we all refresh our memories on spore count thresholds and actions in response to these.

Low:

    • Regional spore counts less than 10,000 spores/g pasture
    • Action: Monitor regional spore counts

Increasing:

    • Regional spore counts of 20,000 – 30,000 spores/g pasture
    • Action: Start monitoring YOUR FARM’S spore counts

High:

    • Individual farm spore counts greater than 30,000 spores/g pasture
    • Action: Dose cows at FULL RATES

This week Gribbles Laboratory has recorded a sample from Matamata as being over 100,000 spores/g! This is a timely reminder that spore counts vary from farm to farm and while monitor farms give us important trend data they should not be treated as your farm’s absolute potential risk.
