Clinical cases sighted

March 26, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 5,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks –  62,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks –  3.300 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 16,600  spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  1,600 spores/gram

Evidence of high spore counts was seen this week with a number of clinical cases of facial eczema seen in stock out at grazing. This is a timely reminder that spore counts vary from farm to farm and the only way to know your risk is to check your grass for spores.
Counts on monitor farms have slightly reduced, however counts in Matamata still present high risk, followed by Tirau showing moderate risk. While the trend is down it is likely that the counts will remain stable and present moderate to high risk as weather continues to favour spore multiplication.
